History
History of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport in Timişoara The defining periods that marked the evolution of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport at the West University of Timişoara are:
1960-1983: Beginning On October 1, 1960, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport in Timisoara opened its activity through the Order of the Ministry of Education and Culture no. 01888, with a study duration of 3 years. At first, with a modest experience and an initial eight-person teaching staff, it will gradually increase over the next few years in order to cover the diversity of activities in the institution and the material base has improved. In 1963 the activity was organized on two departments, and in
1968/69, on three chairs. From this year, in order to develop the training of students in special qualitative conditions, they were made available to them: classrooms and seminars; a modern sports game room and physical education; two gymnasiums; bituminous basketball court, bituminous handball field (built in 1968); tennis court on clay; multifunctional bituminous platform consisting of four basketball courts and two handball courts with stands; lawn football field, athletics, general physical education; lockers, showers, sanitary fittings; teaching laboratories, four laboratories equipped with partially imported equipment, materials and equipment for teaching activities. From 1975/1976 the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport becomes a department within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The number of schooling is constantly narrowing and in the summer of 1983 it ends its activity with the last student promotion.
1990-present: Re-establishment and development The Department of Physical Education and Sport at the Faculty of Letters, Philosophy and History, with a duration of four years of study, was established in 1990 under the structure of the Department of Physical Education of Timisoara University. Since 1995, the department has become a self-standing faculty under the name of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport. It currently works, consisting of two departments: Department I (Practical-Methodical Disciplines of Specialty) and 2nd Chair (Theoretical Disciplines and Physical Education – Basic Course).
In 1997, besides the specialization Physical Education and Sports, the second specialization was set up: Physiotherapy. Responding to the requirements of harnessing the sporting potential and the tradition of the area, in close collaboration with the Deva Sports High School, the College of Sportsmanship in Deva was founded in 1999, focusing on the training of coaches in gymnastics and athletics. Subordinated to our faculty, the college operated until 2005 with five graduate promotions. 2008 has a distinct feature in our recent history as we record the latest 4-year graduate promotion and the first 3-year graduate promotion (Bologna system). The latter have the opportunity to follow the Master’s (2 years) cycle organized in five specializations:
- Physical and Sports Education;
- Fitness and Motor Performance;
- Management of physical and sports education activities and organizations;
- Physical therapy in orthopedic-traumatic pathology;
- Physical recovery and kinetoprophylaxis.
